They are used to cut and break hard materials during digging.While, End bits are similar hardened cutting edges located at the front of a bucket. They are the primary tool used to pierce, break and remove material.

• High-carbon steel alloys: Often used for general purpose digging in soil, aggregates, etc. due to their combination of hardness, strength and low cost.
• High-alloy steels: Contain additions like chromium and manganese to withstand more abrasive conditions like digging in rock or demolition applications.
• Carbide-tipped: Have strategic inserts of tungsten carbide or other ultra-hard materials that prolong life.
• Titanium: Rarely used but highly durable for corrosive, sandy or salt-laden environments which can degrade other steels more quickly.
